Pembroke Politics Society is delighted to welcome Labour MP Wes Streeting to the College to speak about the future of the Labour Party.

The talk promises to be insightful, and Wes is well positioned to talk about the future of the Labour Party. He has at points been critical of Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership, particularly over antisemitism, and is aligned with the centre-left of the Labour Party. However, he spoke at the Progress rally at the National Labour Conference 2018 against a party split arguing ‘centrist’ parties come like buses as you ‘wait 30 years for one then three come along at once’ and these buses are on the ‘road to nowhere’. Wes read history at Selwyn and was elected CUSU president in 2004. He also served as President of the NUS 2008-2010. He has a strong interest in education and social justice, working as Head of Education for the LGBT charity Stonewall and before that as Chief Executive of the Helena Kennedy Foundation, which supports disadvantaged students to access higher education.

Wes was first elected the MP for Ilford North in 2015 overturning a Conservative majority of over 5000. He then was returned with an increased majority in 2017. He holds the largest majority for a Labour MP since the seat’s creation in 1945.

This talk is likely to be popular, so please arrive well in time for the start of the talk to ensure a seat. There will be *free* wine and cheese available.
