2024 Volunteers of the Year Award Winners

Congratulations to Dr Richard Parmee (1970) and Denise Taylorson whose contributions to Pembroke have been recognised in Pembroke’s Volunteer of the Year Awards for 2024. The award was introduced in 2022 to recognise not only the particular individuals who contribute their time and expertise for the benefit of the College and its community but also the value of volunteering itself.

Richard and Denise received their awards from the Master, Lord Smith of Finsbury, at Pembroke’s annual Benefactors’ Reception on Saturday 15 June.

Richard Parmee and his company the Cheyney Group joined Pembroke’s Corporate Partnership Programme at Pembroke in 2008. In the same year, he founded the annual Parmee Prize, a business plan competition for students. Richard has continued to sponsor and mentor entrepreneurial Pembroke students, many of whom have gone on to develop successful businesses.

An entrepreneur himself, Richard’s belief was that a relatively small amount of cash and an experienced guide could help the next generation avoid making unnecessary mistakes, and that the entrepreneurial gene could be identified and nurtured.

While a host of similar competitions are run by other colleges, the original and best is here. We are thankful that Richard not only came up with the idea but that he still supports our students with so much of his precious time, including by delivering pitching training. He has also encouraged several of our alumni to donate their time by serving on the judging panel.

In addition to his work with the Parmee Prize, Richard is a distinguished member of the William Pitt Fellowship. He regularly attends our events and plays a crucial role in welcoming new Fellows, helping them navigate their responsibilities and encouraging their active participation in college life, particularly within the Corporate Partnership Programme.

Upon receiving this award, Richard said: “Receiving the Volunteer of the Year Award was a huge surprise, and just for doing something which is such fun I would like to say thank you!”

Denise Taylorson

Our second winner, Denise Taylorson, pictured above receiving her award from the Master, is a dedicated member of the Pembroke Circle and stands out as one of the College's most energetic volunteers, working tirelessly with the Development Office to support all our students. Her contributions extend beyond general support; she provides tailored advice, guidance and coaching specifically for those on the LEAP programme.

For the past three years, Denise has been offering one-to-one coaching to Pembroke students. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many wishing to stay in touch with her long after their formal coaching sessions have concluded. Denise's approach is tailored to each student, ensuring that they receive practical advice in the areas where they need the most support. Whether it’s mastering the art of being heard, presenting to large audiences, or excelling in interviews, Denise's guidance has been invaluable.

Her unwavering commitment and exceptional work with our students have significantly benefited the College and enhanced the success of the LEAP programme. On receiving this award, Denise said:

“I was very surprised and honoured to receive the award. I have found it challenging and rewarding to work with LEAP students. My general focus has been building confidence, especially when speaking in front of others; communication and interview skills; and entering the world of professional work.
For me, being able to share my personal and professional experience has been very stimulating, and I’ve gained great insights into how people approach their lives and figure things out. I enjoy keeping in touch with students after they have graduated so that I can help them with for example a change of job. This helps me feel very integrated into the world of Pembroke. I would encourage others to think about the many ways they can support Pembroke, it is an honour to be involved”
