40th Anniversary of International Programmes at Pembroke

In the summer of 1977 Pembroke hosted its first summer programme, for just over fifty students from the University of California.  As you can see from the photo from that year, Pembroke must have felt like a very different place over the summer than it did during the regular academic year!

Today the International Programmes Department offers a broader range of vacation and term-time programmes, including the Spring Semester Programme and its flagship summer programme, the Pembroke-King’s Programme, and welcomes more than 600 students to Pembroke each year.  As well as providing extraordinary opportunities for international students to experience student life in Cambridge, the Department gives Pembroke undergraduates and graduate students opportunities for vacation work, facilitates a growing number of programmes for Pembroke students to study or do internships overseas, and works with the Development Office to maintain links with over 3,000 former summer students through the Pembroke College Circle.

To mark this 40th anniversary we will host an exhibition in November 2017 covering the development and future shape of International Programmes at Pembroke.  From January to November 2017 we will also post a series of monthly profiles on the College website of a number of former students and staff who have been involved with International Programmes and the impact their time at Pembroke had on them, so watch this space!
