Admission of Tariq Hussain to the William Pitt Fellowship

On 17th May 2024, we added another new William Pitt Fellow to our ranks and toasted the continued work between the College and Dell Technologies in a partnership that is going from strength to strength. During the admission ceremony, Tariq Hussain, Head of UK Public Sales, Dell Technologies, signed the matriculation book to become a member of Pembroke College.

Tariq Hussain signs the Matriculation Book as the Praelector, Dr Moreed Arbabzadah, watches over him.

Since graduating from the University of Swansea with a BSc in Geography and Psychology, Tariq has accrued thirty years of commercial expertise across manufacturing, transport, consulting and information technology. In his role as Head of UK Public Salesfor Dell, he brings this experience to bear, driving growth across all of Dell’s end-to-end products and services, and offering technology solutions across the breadth of the British Public Sector.

A keen oarsman who trialled at GB level in the Under 21s division, and more recently at Marlow Rowing Club, Tariq brings his love of sports to Dell where he leads the annual Dell Management Challenge – a thrilling two day ‘adventure race’ in the Brecon Beacons where 250 people from across Dell, their partners, and their customers tackle a multi-stage race, build management skills, and raise money for charity.

Tariq listens as the Praelector introduces the ceremony.

Tariq’s admission to the William Pitt Fellowship marks another milestone in both Pembroke College and the University’s continuing work with Dell Technologies. Since Dell first joined the Corporate Partnership Programme in 2022 Dell has worked hand in hand with Research Computing Services at the University of Cambridge to develop the ground-breaking 'Dawn' – the UK’s fastest artificial intelligence supercomputer.

Dawn has massively increased the country’s AI and simulation compute capacity for academic and industrial use, and is already being used by a number of academics across Cambridge including Pembroke Fellow Professor Anil Madhavapeddy. As well as driving advancements in climate modelling, Dawn is expected to contribute to developments in healthcare and fusion energy research.

With the signatures completed, and Tariq now equipped with all the relevant trappings of his new Fellowship including a gown, we headed to High Table for dinner. As guests from Dell and Intel mingled with the academic community the tables buzzed with excitement and possibility. We look forward to continuing our working relationship with Dell and being not only their home in Cambridge, but the home for Government and academic stakeholders coming to Cambridge to learn more about how Dawn can advance scientific and industrial goals to meet social need.
