Dr Sarah Nouwen wins ESRC Future Research Leaders grant

Dr Sarah Nouwen has been awarded a Future Research Leaders grant from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

Her project, titled Peacemaking: What's Law Got to Do With It?, will seek to understand the relationship between recurring practices in peace negotiations and customary international law.

The ESRC praised her project proposal as 'exceptionally strong' and as 'one of the very rare socio-legal projects that genuinely and interestingly engages with both the socio and the legal'. The project will start in January 2015 and run for three years.

The Future Research Leaders scheme is designed to enable outstanding early-career social scientists to become the future world leaders in their field. The call is open to high-quality candidates from anywhere in the world who have a maximum of four years and four months' postdoctoral experience and the support of an eligible UK research organisation. This year, forty grants were awarded of which three were to academics at the University of Cambridge.

Sarah lectures and supervises students in International Law and International Criminal Law, International Human Rights Law and Transitional Justice. Her book, Complementarity in the Line of Fire: The Catalysing Effect of the International Criminal Court in Uganda and Sudan (Cambridge University Press, 2013), is based on interviews and observations of domestic legal reforms in Uganda and Sudan.
