Pembroke College Cambridge

Fifth Annual Bach-a-thon

On the 14th and 15th June, 83 organists will come together to play the complete organ works of Bach in 24 hours.

This is the fifth year that Anna Lapwood, the Director of College Music at Pembroke, has brought organists together from across the world to celebrate Bach and raise money for charity.

The Bach-a-thon will feature live performances on the organ of Pembroke College coupled with pre-recorded performances from UK, Ireland, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Latvia, Germany, Iceland, France, Austria, Hungary, the Netherlands, and South Korea. It will also bring together organists of all abilities, from school students to professional concert organists. It will also feature some special guests, including the singer and presenter Aled Jones, and Great British Bake Off star (and organist) Henry Bird.

The event begins at 12 noon on the 14th June with Cameron Carpenter performing Bach’s Fantasia on Komm Heiliger Geist BWV 651, and closes at 12 noon on the 15th June with David Briggs performing Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in G major BWV 541 in the cathedral of St John the Divine, New York. It will be streamed live on The Choirs of Cambridge Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pembrokechoir

This year's Bach-a-thon will be raising money for two charities:

  • The Muze Trust, which is currently raising funds to provide tablets to schools so that they can be used to aid music teaching. Tablets allow students to look at scores, listen to recordings and even use mini-keyboards.
  • The Estelle Trust which works to support orphans and vulnerable children in deprived areas of Zambia through education, training and social development.

Donations in support of these two charities can be made online at https://www.facebook.com/donate/286356353215551/
