His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, 1921 – 2021

Pembroke was saddened to learn of the death of Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh. Our thoughts are with Her Majesty The Queen and her family.

The Duke of Edinburgh served as Chancellor of the University of Cambridge between 1976 and 2011.

On 23 June 1998, the Duke of Edinburgh performed the formal opening ceremony of Foundress Court. The then Master Sir Roger Tomkys and Lady Tomkys were his hosts when he stayed for two nights at the new Master’s Lodge. At the formal Dinner in Hall on the first evening, the Duke of Edinburgh proposed a toast to the College in ‘a characteristic and impromptu speech of reply’. The following evening, at the Master’s Lodge, a select gathering of a dozen Graduate Students, Undergraduates and Fellows dined with the Chancellor.
