The Online Summer Research Programme 2021

This summer Pembroke was delighted to host 88 students on the Online Summer Research Programme 2021.

In a first for the International Programmes Department this programme took place entirely online, offering students the unique opportunity to experience the Cambridge supervision style of teaching from anywhere in the world.

Over four weeks between 12 July and 8 August, students worked individually with an academic expert to conduct research and prepare a final project, either entirely of their choice or from a selection of subject streams. With research projects spanning topics from computer science to bioethics, our students covered a real breadth of areas.

Outside of formal teaching, we brought together students from different disciplines and continents to build a community and form friendships through online social and networking events. Our two dedicated Programme Assistants ran activities from art history masterclasses to an online talent show, and students were also invited to plenary lectures given by the Master of Pembroke on the UK’s post-pandemic and post-Brexit future, and Dr Cesare Hall on working towards zero emissions air travel.

A small group of students were also selected to present their research at a final event which you will be able to learn more about on the Kit Smart Blog in the coming months.

Speaking at the end of the programme, Dr Geeta Kasanga, the programme’s Academic Director said: “While our journey together has been short, I have been impressed with the dedication, diligence and enterprise the students have shown on their research projects. All are brilliant qualities that will stand them in good stead as they take their next steps in academia or life in general. I wish them the very best for both!”

Programme Manager, Rebecca Withers added: "It was a real pleasure to work on the Online Summer Research Programme this year. It felt very special for us to, once again, be able to make connections with students from around the world. I hope that some of them will be able to come and visit us in Cambridge one day!”
