Pembroke College to welcome A-level students as part of STEM SMART pilot programme

Pembroke College is delighted to be among the Colleges hosting A-level students on the brand-new STEM SMART widening participation pilot programme.

'STEM SMART is a brilliant new initiative to give many students who wouldn't otherwise have the chance, the opportunity to develop their skills and confidence in science, engineering, technology and maths subjects,' said Lord Smith, Master of Pembroke. 'I'm very proud that Pembroke is part of the launch.'

Pembroke will be among the first colleges to welcome STEM SMART students: offering additional learning through real time online tutorials and virtual lectures. Students will also be assigned a Cambridge student as a mentor, to speak about University life and to help support their continued engagement with the programme. We are also looking forward to welcoming students who participate in the programme to a four-day residential in Cambridge in August 2022.

This new widening participation initiative will enhance Pembroke’s extended commitment to encouraging and supporting talented young people from all backgrounds to apply to Cambridge. STEM SMART will complement our existing programme of widening participation events in STEM subjects, which includes an annual three-day Year 11 Women in Science residential programme, and Year 12 Subject Masterclasses.

We are also delighted to welcome all interested students to our upcoming live webinars in September 2021. Suitable for students in Year 13/S6 (or equivalent), our general College Q&As (16th & 17th September) and Natural Sciences Q&A (21st September) will give prospective applicants the chance to find out more about Pembroke College and ask questions to academic tutors, admissions staff, and current Pembroke students.

Prospective applicants are also very welcome to come and have a look around the Pembroke College grounds for a self-guided tour.
