Pembroke College Cambridge

Record percentage of offer holders from state schools!

2022 Offer-holder statistics

Having sent out all our decisions from the most recent admissions round, Pembroke is delighted to share some statistics about this year’s offers.

Offers were made this year, as they are every year, based on academic potential. We considered a wide range of academic and contextual factors to decide who looked strongest overall and would go on to receive an offer of a place with us. We are, as ever, grateful to all those who took the time and effort to apply to us. Our applicants were a group of hugely talented young people.

Below you can find information on how many offers we made, and how these are broken down. Some of the offer holders will be for deferred entry, but the majority are to those who we hope will be joining us in October 2022.

Total number of offers made: 161

  • 48% of offer holders are women, and 52% are men;
  • 81% of our offers have been made to home students, and 19% to those from overseas and the EU;
  • 4.3% of our offers were made through the Winter Pool.

Of our home offer holders:

  • 78.5% are from the state sector;
  • 34.6% have been made to applicants with at least one indicator of disadvantage. These include:
    • Being a care leaver;
    • Living in an area that is in the bottom two quintiles of the Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD);
    • Living in an area in the bottom two quintiles for progression to higher education (POLAR4);
    • Being eligible for Free School Meals;
    • Attended a low performing GCSE school;
    • Attend a school with low progression rates to Oxford and Cambridge;
    • Have experienced extenuating circumstances that may have affected their educational journey.
  • 14.6% live in areas that are in the bottom two IMD quintiles;
  • 4.6% live in areas that are in the bottom POLAR4 quintile;
  • 13.8% live in areas that are in the bottom two POLAR4 quintiles;
  • 8.5% are eligible for Free School Meals.

Lord Smith, Master of Pembroke, said: "We are very proud in Pembroke that we offer places based strictly on a careful assessment of merit; but we are also constantly striving to broaden the range of applicants that we draw in. We want to encourage the very brightest students to apply to Pembroke, from whatever background they come. Their home or school circumstances should not be any barrier to them coming here to study. I’m delighted that we have such a wonderfully talented group of students arriving here next year."

Please note that ethnicity data is not yet available. UCAS releases this data in the autumn, after students matriculate to the university.

Statistics could change slightly, as more information becomes available to us.
