Sir John Sulston (1942 – 2018)

The College is saddened to learn of the death of Sir John Sulston (1960) CH FRS on 6 March at the age of 75.

Sir John read Natural Sciences and Part II Chemistry at Pembroke and continued as a graduate student working on nucleotide synthesis. He went on to become a pioneering geneticist and won a Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2002 for his work on the cell lineage and genome of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Sir John had been an Honorary Fellow of the College since 2000. He was awarded a knighthood for services to genome research in the 2001 New Year Honours list. Last year the Queen appointed him a Companion of Honour.
