Have Yourself a Merry Little Bridgemas!

The last week of Michaelmas term is traditionally referred to as ‘Bridgemas’, due to the tendency to celebrate Christmas a month early, before the undergraduates go home for the holidays. Kit Smart left the warmth of her cat basket to observe the various Bridgemas festivities taking place this year.

Some of the catering staff and a few volunteers got together in the Hall to put up the Christmas tree decorations. It was such a big tree that some stepladders and a tall Butler were required to place the star on top.

On December 1st, staff and students were invited to gather in the Library to listen to a unique piece of Christmas history: a 1953 vinyl recording of the then-choir singing some carols at Pembroke. An old photograph of the graduates from that year was also on display. You can listen to a recording taken at the event below.

The Children’s Christmas Party on Saturday 5th was an opportunity for the children and grandchildren of Pembroke staff to enjoy some festive entertainment put on by the College. James Gardom, the Dean, held a nativity service in the Chapel where several children were invited to don costumes and gather around the crib. The bouncy castle and magic show were very popular, as was the face painting in the Senior Parlour. The star attraction this year was the collection of birds of prey, who were perched along a table in the Hall and also proved very popular with the staff helpers setting up beforehand.
