Teaching and Learning

Are you self-motivated, keen to learn how theory translates to practice and want to make a difference to the world?

You’ll thrive on the Online Capstone Programme!

Our programmes are renowned for their rigorous and intellectually challenging content, and at the centre of our ethos is the individualised nature of Cambridge teaching.

Over eight weeks you’ll immerse yourself in the Capstone Project of your choice and work one-on-one with a leading practitioner or expert academic in the subject area to produce a high-quality Capstone Project Report.

What is a Capstone Project?

Put simply, a Capstone Project focuses on real-world challenges. It enables you to take the knowledge and skills that you have acquired in the course of your studies so far and put them into practice. You will work with leading practitioners and academics to contribute to existing knowledge or propose innovative solutions to current and complex issues in your chosen field of study.

Choosing a Capstone Project

The Online Capstone Programme offers you Capstone Projects to choose from in the following areas, with more on the way:

When deciding on a Capstone Project, we strongly recommend that you aim for the Capstone Project where you already have some background knowledge and that matches your interests. As part of your application, you’ll complete a Capstone Project Form detailing your selection and reasons for the selection.

Take a look at how to apply for the programme.

Once you start working on the Capstone Project, the focus of the project may develop and lead you in quite a different direction to the one that was first envisaged. For many this is an exciting and rewarding aspect of the Cambridge supervision style of learning, so aim to be flexible and follow your supervisor’s guidance.

How the teaching on the programme works

You will receive 8 x 1-hour sessions individually with your supervisor who will guide your Capstone Project, challenge you academically and support your work.

The focus of a Cambridge education is on depth of knowledge, cultivating critical thinking and independent study, not on contact hours. For each week, you should expect to spend between 8 - 15 hours studying, researching and preparing for supervisions and your final submission.

What support will I get?

We offer you plenty of guidance – both by your supervisor and your designated Director of Studies (DoS).

Your supervisor will determine the focus of the Capstone Project to ensure it is feasible within the eight weeks of the programme, and set exciting challenges each week for you to meet.

Your DoS will help monitor your progress and be available to provide support alongside your supervisor. Your DoS is available over email or you can book a time for an online meeting.

Resources

We expect you’ll carry out most of your research online and your supervisor will help you navigate this throughout your Capstone Project.

Unfortunately, we’re unable to offer access to the University of Cambridge or Pembroke College’s library resources.
